Now a frontier town, Aachen, also known as Aken and Aix–la-Chappelle, includes stretches of border with both Belgium and the Netherlands. A Roman city of great significance, its spa and geographical position made it an ideal choice as northern capital of the great Frankish empire of Charlemagne.
Indeed, the magnificent cathedral built by Charlemagne and set in a lovely cobbled market square sits proudly in the centre. The Rathaus is another very famous building. An excellent shopping centre, boasting many varied museums, the city centre is compact and ‘manageable.’
