Aachen

Aachen is an ideal location to visit at Christmas, with many school trips visiting the Christmas markets. It also is an ideal location for German Language school trips.

Aachen, the gem of North Rhine–Westphalia, has certainly enjoyed a richly diverse cultural history. Now a frontier town, Aachen, also known as Aken and Aix–la-Chappelle, includes stretches of border with both Belgium and the Netherlands. A Roman city of great significance, its spa and geographical position made it an ideal choice as northern capital of the great Frankish empire of Charlemagne.

Indeed, the magnificent cathedral built by Charlemagne and set in a lovely cobbled market square sits proudly in the centre. The Rathaus is another very famous building. An excellent shopping centre, boasting many varied museums, the city centre is compact and ‘manageable.’

Perhaps the best time for a school trip to savour the unique ambience of Aachen is at Christmas time when the city comes alive with the sights, smells and sounds of the charming Christmas market stalls. Set in the idyllic surroundings of the city centre, this is without doubt an unforgettable very ‘German’ experience with all kinds of goods, food and drink on offer! The treasures of the city, its location at just five hours from Calais, together with the excellent accommodation we are able to offer in Aachen is making this an increasingly popular destination for school trips.

Alternatively, groups can visit the Phatasialand amusement park. This vibrant and exciting park is reknowned not only for its rides but also for it’s wide variety of shows, which make this park a uniquely German experience. Click here to visit their website.
