Normandy is a popular location for History school trips as it is locatation of the World War II Battlefields (WWII) and the D-Day Landing Beaches.
The area between Ste. Mère Eglise in the north and Merville in the south was quite literally the front line in the D–Day landings and the Battle of Normandy in 1944, the start of the end of World War II.
The names of the landing beaches themselves, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword will be forever remembered. The entire area is full of reminders of this period of history, making it the ideal location for a school trip to the World War II Battlefields.
Bayeux was the first town in north–west France to be liberated from the Germans by the Allied forces and is home to the D–Day Memorial Museum and the British Memorial Cemetery. The Musée du Débarquement and the Arromanches 360° Cinema can be found at Arromanches, with the remains of the Mulberry Harbours still clearly visible from the shore. At Caen is the Mémorial de Caen, a unique place and exemplary in its presentation of the history of World War II and beyond. The Mémorial Pegasus at Ranville houses the original Pegasus Bridge, complete with authentic bullet holes and shrapnel damage!
All of the above are easily accessible within a relatively small geographical area, making Normandy the perfect destination for History school trips. For pupils studying World War II a visit to the area is essential for a fuller understanding of the events which took place here.
