Ypres Salient Guided Tour
This guided tour is highly recommended and can be tailor-made to suit your needs. By prior arrangement there is the possibility for members of the party to conduct research into individual soldiers. Also, we are able to arrange a guided tour that looks at how the war affected soldiers from your part of the country. For example a Welsh theme to a tour might include a visit to the grave of the famous Welsh-language poet Hedd Wyn. In fact, a guided tour can be arranged for groups interested in all World War One poetry.
The guided tour would normally incorporate many sights including Essex Farm (casualty treatment centre and graveyard), Talbot House at Poperinge, the enormous TyneCot British Cemetery, the German cemetery at Langemark and the village of Passchendaele.
Hill 62/ Sanctuary Wood
Highly recommended! The scene of bitter battles between German and Canadian forces is now an informal museum housing an incredible collection of World War artefacts - pictures, shells, shoes..! You can also walk in the original trenches - Bring your wellies!
Ypres and the Cloth Hall Museum
It is ideal to include in your visit to the town of Ypres a visit to St. George’sMemorial Church, the Menin Gate (where the Last Post is sounded each evening at 2000 by the local Fire Brigade in memory of those who perished in the terrible conflict) and the ClothHall Museum. Situated in the central square of Ypres this tremendously effective museum, which was bombed during the war but rebuilt as a fine museum, takes a thorough look at all aspects of the First World War. Its informal, but forceful nature, with good use of sounds, smells and particularly the audio-visual makes it an extremely popular visit. We would recommend that you do this visit after your guided tour.
